Films I Watched In: March
Unlucky for some but lucky for me (because I say so) – I watched thirteen films over the month of March. Crazy amount to be honest. That’s like, seriously, did all I do (is that grammatically correct or am I getting the dumb gene like Lisa Simpson) was sit around (hmmm) watching films?
Did all I do was sit around? – anyone care to help with that?
So on with the films, which I’m listing in the chronological order of their release (because I hardly ever do that). Oh and all of them except three were re-watches. No surprises there.
Sunset Boulevard (1950) – first time watch

Starting with first time watches, I’m sorry but The Grey was utterly boring, disappointing nonsense and let’s-turn-this-shit-off-because-I’m-losing-the-will-to-live.
I only watched it because I’ve been going through something best described as ‘The Liam Neeson Leather Jacket Season’ AND IT WASN’T EVEN FREE ON PRIME! The premise is pretty good to be fair. Plane crash in the middle of some snowy distant land, fight for survival and a bunch of scary wolves that very possibly may (please let it happen) eat someone. But all that happens is mumbling and being boring and stupid flashbacks that mean NOTHING. NOTHING! No wolf action. No eating people. Nothing.
The biggest cop out *massive spoiler ahead* is Liam Neeson doing the first exciting thing in the movie and tooling himself up with broken bottles and other scary fighting things to fight the head honcho wolf and then, just as your interest is slightly peaked, the film ENDS. Seriously, it just ends and you don’t see the fight. Neeson must be kicking himself, people win Oscars for that kind of thing nowadays.
Sunset Boulevard on the other hand, absolutely loved it. Didn’t know a thing about it before I watched it and loved it. One of the most exciting things was main character Joe (William Holden) saying when his birthday was – the 21st December. Which is the same as me! And also Samuel L Jackson and Kiefer Sutherland.
Yeah, we all celebrate by doing that. It’s a 21st December thing.
Only other first time watch was Eric Clapton: A Life in 12 Bars, which I reviewed the other day – so go read it here.
Thinking about it, the re-watches are mainly horrors. Which is super cool of course. I’m sure everyone is familiar with the Insidious movies, which back in the day were quite fun but in all honesty don’t stand the test of time too well and show themselves for the classics they’ll never quite be (ooh, bitchy). The Shining, Creepshow, Hellraiser, Misery – all classics, all great. The Shining in particular wow, I hadn’t watched it in a few years and I must have forgotten how great it is. It’s the atmosphere that really did it for me. The backdrop, the foreboding score, the sense of complete dread and that damn crazy carpet pattern. Fantastic. Same with Hellraiser. I felt a little trepidation as I put it on because I remembered it being kind of corny even when I was young but actually, I enjoyed it a lot. And found Frank a little sexy if I’m honest.
Though of course none of these horror classics can compare to the complete fun thrill ride that is Tremors (TREMORS!!!!!) which I LOVED watching again. It’s pretty fluffy really, but in such an enjoyable way.
Why can’t there be more films like Tremors? And whilst we’re at it, Arachnophobia. And The Faculty (which doesn’t follow the pattern I know, but I’ve thought it before and now’s my chance to say it). I’ve obviously rambling now, so time to wrap things up. Oh, you know earlier when I said I found Frank from Hellraiser a little bit sexy, well obviously I meant Pre-Cenobites.
You know, a lot of people wouldn’t even have to clarify that last bit that but something told me it was vital that I should.

Tremors is so fun! One of the first “scary” movies I’ve ever seen. I hated worms for a while though haha.

I think it was one of the first ‘scary’ movies I saw too! I remember I was scared when they lifted the hat off the ground and that guy’s head was under it!! Do you still hate worms? 🙂

Oh my gosh! Yes, I remember that scene so well! Or, when the snake-tongues are shown for the first time: yikes!
Haha yes I do! I have to tip-toe around them every morning after it rains. And it ruined fishing for me, because I hate touching them lol.

wow. Ive seen all of ur choices but 3… can u guess which ones ems!
13 films a month is quite impressive, but if that’s considered spending all ur time watching films, what would one say about someone like me??? 🙂

Have you ever seen Critters? I love that series. Much like Tremors, which I so like, it’s goofy horror and the more sequels they released, the worse the series got. But Critters 1 and 2 are solid, cheesy horror flicks.
The Shining is an enduring horror experience, it’s effective no matter how much time passes. Stephen King hates it, and it’s the greatest example of how much of a madman Kubrick was, in lieu of more apt and stronger words for him hahaha
Funny thing about Hellraiser, I knew of Pinhead and the Cenobites way before I even saw Hellraiser. The beauty of popular culture, eh?
I’ve never seen Creepshow, Is it good? We should organise a movie night some time, somewhere hahaha

I have actually seen all of these, except ’21 Jump Street’. That makes a change.
Glad you finally got around to ‘Sunset Boulevard’. That really is a ‘must-watch’ for any cinema lover.

So glad you saw “Sunset Boulevard” – a classic film that I’ve seen many times…if you are interested, a friend of mine here in LA held a special screening of the film and the last remaining cast member, Nancy Olsen, who was Oscar-nominated for her role as the naive script girl Betty Schaefer, was there to talk to the audience…here is that story with a bunch of movie trivia and a clip of Nancy talking about the film – let me know what you think! Oh, and “Tremors”, what a great one too!
