Gory British horror movies
1. Eden Lake (2008)
Eden Lake is simply one of the best horror movies I’ve ever seen and that’s mainly down to how highly realistic and brutal it is. I felt literally shell shocked after I’d finished watching it the first time. Some moments of intense violence and characters you truly care about, this is a fantastic film not for the faint hearted.
2. Mum & Dad (2008)
A little like the real life Fred & Rose West case, this film is pretty sordid and certainly isn’t the best but it does have its moments and a pretty cool ending. And a very surreal ‘Christmas Day’ scene. And I met the main actor Perry Benson when I was at a comedy gig in London a few years ago!
3. Kill List (2011)
Kill List is a very strange, ambiguous, violent and unsettling film. It’s hard to describe to be honest but the story follows a hitman down a rabbit hole of weirdness as he gets embroiled with a job that’s not his usual format. The violence in this film is so realistically shocking I guarantee you’ll be digging your nails into your hands.
4. Creep (2004)
A lot of people slated his film but I actually enjoyed it and I’ve seen it more than once. It’s a pretty cool idea about being locked in the London underground overnight, trying to escape the clutches of a deranged, butchering weirdo. It’s not perfect but it’s a fun, British horror. Look out for the abortion scene!
5. Hellraiser (1987)
This is a nightmarish (and slightly erotic!) horror with plenty of gore courtesy of the cenobites – the demons (or angels, depending on who you’re talking to) who love torture and thrive on pain. Absolute British classic, this is the exact sort of horror film that I was brought up on and still scares me to this day.
6. Inbred (2011)
Never seen someone force fed excrement through a tube until they explode? Then you need to see Inbred – a darkly comic but highly gory horror set in the deep north of England. Unfortunately, it could have been a bit better than it was, but it’s still fun with uniquely gross death scenes. A little reminiscent of The League of Gentlemen at times.
7. Dog Soldiers (2002)
A lot of people talk about Neil Marshall’s The Descent but I prefer Dog Soldiers, which he made first. It’s a genuinely funny film in places with a great cast but when the violence does ensue, it’s pretty damn hot. Want to see someone’s intestines pulled out by a sheepdog? Then this is a film for you.
8. The Living & the Dead (2006)
One of the more disturbing films on the list, this tells the story of a young man with paranoid schizophrenia and other severe mental problems who casually decides to stop taking his medication on the weekend he’s looking after his bed-bound mother. Yep.
9. Severance (2006)
Same director as the aforementioned Creep but this film shows a bigger budget and more humour. Some office workers sent on a team bonding weekend to Eastern Europe run into some serially pissed off and deranged killers. A great mix between The Office and The Hills Have Eyes.
10. Event Horizon (1997)
Okay so the scriptwriter for Event Horizon is American. But the director and much of the cast are British so it’s kinda half and half and it’s gory as HELL (no puns intended) so I had to include it. Event Horizon is one of my favourite horror movies – it’s gross, scary and nightmarish. Just about sums me up really eh?
Great choices, long live British Horror.

On another note, remember Zoe’s post on men in suits? I’ve done my own, only with women this time. And for all the ladies, there is something for you as well.

The Kill List. That movie scared the S**T out of me the first time I watched it. It was 2am I had to go into the garden to smoke a Ciggie. I didn’t last very long out there, believe me ;] The last half hour of that movie is just incredible. And as for The Wicker Man, all time classic. I am loving your blog and will come back more often :]

Aww thanks! Same to you, your posts are always fun and creative.
Bloody LOVE Kill List!! One of the weirdest movies I’ve seen. It annoyed me at first in a way how confusing it was (I kind of like firmer endings!) but having seen it again and read things online I’m fairly satisfied. The violence in it is so sick too! When he runs his cut hand under use tap!!
Haha yeah I can imaging completely 🙂 standing there in the dark smoking a fag….imagining cults and hunchbacks and tunnels!!!!! 😀

Like you, I had to go back to it and watch it again. It’s amazing what you see when you do this. For example- at the beginning of the film he is playing with his wife and child in the garden. His wife is carrying the child piggy back style and fighting with swords. It all seems so obvious, but it’s not. I won’t say anymore as I don’t want to risk spoiling it for others.
Yes, it freaked me out and turned me into temporary paranoid nutcase.

Yes!!! When I realised how that scene had already been ‘predicted’ when they were playing in the garden it made me feel slightly ill. It was so sick!!!
It’s such a screwed up movie. I’m still not 100% certain on the whole plot but it kind of makes sense.
Haha that sounds like me!! A paranoid nutcase I mean 😀

It is sick and very screwed up. Makes me paranoid that these people exist for real. No, I’m not paranoid…they do exist.

They certainly do!
I watched The Football Factory on Saturday and HOW DIFFERENT Neil Maskell looks in that!! He’s so cool in Kill List.

I haven’t seen that one, but Neil Maskell is a great actor. Have you seen him in the C4 series Utopia? He’s outstanding as a dehumanised assassin. Essential viewing.

I haven’t!! But I know exactly what you mean and I’ve seen it advertised and thought many times I’d really like it!!!
I’ll see if it’s still on 4od.
(he just looked like a complete slob in The Football Factory….just a slobby thug haha, not the cool slick guy from Kill List)
