Some of you may remember back in 2018 I posted a very, very, very excited post (read it here) all about my ridiculous anticipation for The Meg – that summer’s rather fun blockbuster with Jason Statham playing a brilliantly smug, unintentionally comical, still really buff for his age, stereotyped LEGEND who punches a 70 foot shark in the earhole – all whilst drinking a few beers, bucking authority and schmoozing the film’s leading lady – of course.
I mean…what is not not to love!!
Here’s a pic of me and my boyfriend about to watch The Meg in 3D IMAX (no substitutes). My brother was with us also but too embarrassed to clown around in the cinema making a scene and taking selfies. You know, I’m not sure he enjoyed it as much as me either. Tsk.

So the very top pic is taken from The Meg (2018) – there are no teasers at all yet for The Meg 2. In fact I had no idea at all they’d even BE a sequel until I saw something purely by chance, on Twitter.
So yay, great news – The Meg rises again – hurrah!!!! Come on, I’m not the only excited person am I? Surely you are devoid of a human soul if you don’t want to watch a mega giant shark movie? I mean, give me one good reason (and I’m being serious) just WHY this wouldn’t appeal to you?? Go on then!
Anyway, slightly aggressive “you WILL like this movie” speech over, what I really wanted to say was the thing that REALLY got my attention was just who is directing it.
Bizarrely – to say the very least, the director will be none other than Ben Wheatley.
Ben Wheatley!
Now, if you like me are familiar with Wheatley’s films then you will know why this is so god darn strange and absolute cloud cuckoo land territory. I mean, he’s not exactly known for his Hollywood blockbusters – let alone sequels about giant sharks.
Ben Wheatley generally makes very strange films and even when compared to generally strange films you could call Wheatley’s films even stranger. Just not….. not something you would EVER associate with Jason Statham shark sequels I guess.
I’ve been a fan of his work for years, so this is not a bad thing at all. It’s fucking exciting actually and what the hell will a director like him even DO with such a story?! Nope, not bad – just odd. I even had to IMDB it because I thought, nah, this has to be some late April Fools surely? But it’s true. Very, very true. You can read here a few thoughts on the subject with the man himself.
So basically I just wanted to share with you today my very curious intrigue and anticipation for The Meg 2 – I’m just as excited as last time, but THIS time even more fascinated.
THE MEG 2: THE TRENCH!
Sharks, sharks, sharks, sharks, sharks.
Ben Wheatley also made A Field In England, making this appointment even stranger for me…

I love this! More than your enthusiasm for the franchise, it’s the news that Ben Wheatley will helm it…his films are unique if not always successful…if he brings a certain vision to the style and storytelling without hindering the “popcorn” elements that this kind of film needs, it could be massive!

Clam – this is kind of, truly bizarre news. I can only imagine what his gory special effects team will come up with for this. Sounds great! I’m in!

I saw that Wheatley was slated for this! I can’t even get my head around that. Although after Sightseeers maybe I can

I can’t either!!! I know Sightseers was kind of gory and murderous but still, it WAS a strange film. It’s just so odd thinking of him directing such a ‘summer blockbuster’ type of thing but I’m guessing it will meet somewhere in the middle 🙂 I’m excited!
