The Big Lebowski – soundtrack review
I’m pretty sure most film fans go through their ‘Big Lebowski’ phase. I know it was certainly a film I loved and quoted (and quoted…..and quoted) when I was a teenager. And you know, still to this day I’m not completely sure what happened. The kidnapping, the porn stars and nihilists. The Jesus. The bowling tournament. Talk about a complicated plot.
But today we’re here to discuss the film’s soundtrack. Which I’ve owned for goodness how many years, but (pay attention here kids) this is what happens when you look after something – it still works fine.
The Big Lebowski soundtrack is very similar to the film. Eclectic, slightly odd and very far out man. It’s a groovy soundtrack but some of the tracks are just flat out weird and taken from the context of the film, just sound, well – flat out weird. But luckily there are enough decent tracks to pull it through and actually, it’s better than I remembered. There are tracks on here by Elvis Costello and Nina Simone and of course the AWESOME Gipsy Kings cover of Hotel California – which I just adore.
Plus, how funny is this scene?
My second favourite track is Kenny Rogers & The First Edition – Just Dropped In. I simply cannot listen to this track without dancing. Even if I’m sitting down, my shoulders WILL take over – guaranteed. And film score fans don’t fear, Coen brothers regular Carter Burwell is on here too – obviously. Duh. He wrote the main score.
All in all this isn’t some perfect compilation, but it suits the film and there’s undoubtedly something for everyone. And if someone says it’s rubbish, do you know what I’ll say back?
Yeah…..well…..that’s just like…….your opinion man.
Or even….(it depends on my mood that day)…..
I’ve never listened to the soundtrack as a single entity but I need to rewatch the film again soon so I’ll let it hit me like an Alabama Slammer and hope noone pisses on my rug while I’m away.
It fits the film beautifully but not something I’d listen to all the time. I have the songs I reeeeeally like (Gipsy Kings!) on Spotify anyway 🙂
So what is an Alabama Slamer? I think I’d like it!
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your rug 🙂
This is what happens when you find a stranger in the alps. Yeah this is a movie I was not a fan when I first saw it, but It has indeed grown on me. I love that the soundtrack is as odd and crazy as the film
I love this, and I love the music in it. The two are inseparable really. Great post, brought back some good memories for sure.
Sweet as a nut! So glad it brought back good memories 🙂
It’s such a fun film and the music really does suit it so well!
Cheers Jay 🙂

I have never seen this film. Never wanted to when it came out and really still have no inkling or desire to. Weird eh?
Kinda weird but not weird in a bad way 🙂
Do you like any Coen brothers movies? They can be hit and miss. I think Fargo is a fantastic film though, definitely my favourite.
With The Big Lebowski it’s kinda the characters and quotes that stand out (for me anyway) more than the story!
Looking at their filmography, I cannot say I was actually blown away by anything that they have done. Fargo was okay. No Country For Old Men was all right and so on. Maybe I just don’t like their style. I have no idea.
You know what? I thought I was the ONLY person in the world that doesn’t like this movie. I know you’re not saying that you don’t like it but I’ve never met anyone else who didn’t care for it. Make sense?
When it came out the trailer, the premise the name ‘the Dude,’ all turned me off right away.
I love that!
Yep….
I love Carter Burwell. Great idea for a post, #bestestpalever!
Thanks David!!!! #bewarethemoon #bestestpalever #yesidoireallydo

Great Emma! I love this movie and the Jesus scene is just awesome 🙂
Thanks Marta!!! 🙂
I love the expressions on The Dude, Walter and Donnie’s faces when they’re watching The Jesus haha. Sums up their respective personalities so well!!
Glad you enjoyed the post and love that scene too :))))
Oh yes, their expressions are priceless :-))
Sometimes I watch it on youtube just to make me laugh! The Dude looking the most nonchalant. Then Donnie surprised (and entranced!) and then Walter…….VERY unimpressed! Ha ha ha.
🙂 The Dude is always my favorite!
Okay now reading this over again, I must watch the movie again. It is just toooooo good. And poor Donnie!!!
When they’re ‘setting Donnie free’ and the ash blows back in their faces!!!!!!
YAY! I’m so glad you’re going to watch it again based on this post 🙂
Watching it right now 😀 Will probably do a write up on it just for the hell of it. 😀 😀
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
“you’re out of your element Donnie!”
“8 year olds dude”
Enjoy 🙂 🙂 🙂
Great post!! One of my favourite Coen movies, and there are so many good ones to choose from! I haven’t heard this OST, sounds like I should check it out!!
Thanks very much Jordan!!!! Yeah I’ve always loved this film. This and Fargo are my two favourites 🙂
Definitely check it out!! You’re a groovy kind of dude aren’t you? I think you’d like this! 🙂
