Films I Watched In: August
I watched nine films this month – all re-watches apart from my one cinema outing, which OF COURSE was to see The Meg (2018). I’ve droned on long and hard (hee hee – long and hard) about how much I anticipated I’d love this movie and how much I actually DID love this movie – so I won’t say so much now.
Anyway I find what you can say with words, you can so often say much better with a gif? CHOMP. Okay maybe one word was necessary.
After post ‘The Meg’ depression set in (we couldn’t afford to go again, one night in a 3D / IMAX cinema screen literally crippled us) I did the obvious thing and watched Jaws (1975). It’s one of those films that’s always on TV and usually I catch the opening scene with the girl being pulled along or Robert Shaw dragging his fingers on the blackboard or whatever, but I hadn’t actually seen it IN FULL, for years. And I really enjoyed it. I forgot that Richard Dreyfuss is pretty funny in it as well.
I enjoyed it far more than Prometheus (2012) – which was another re-watch that same weekend. To be honest it just clarified what I thought I felt when I watched it the first time – that I didn’t like it that much. I’m not some huge Alien fan anyway – in the way that some people are really into the franchise and dissect ‘what it all means’ – which for the record, I am NOT mocking, I think it’s cool. But I’m not hardcore – I genuinely like Alien Resurrection (1997) for fucks sake – if you need anymore proof. But going back to Prometheus, I can’t really….I can’t really believe in it. It’s not something that excites me.
I was a little bit pissed when I watched Snakes on a Plane (2006). Not that I needed to be pissed – I’ve seen it before and it’s okay for fun. But yeah in this instance I was a little bit pissed. I did manage watch it to the end but I felt rather fuzzy headed. I don’t actually drink that much to be honest but by coincidence I was this time hung over when I watched Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (2006) – on TV. And it wasn’t a hangover from the Snakes on a Plane thing.
But anyway, despite not being a fan of Tim Burton films really much at all, I do like Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. It’s a lot closer to the book than the Gene Wilder one was, which for the record, I don’t like AT ALL.
I also watched David Brent: Life on the Road (2016) (AGAIN) and The Inbetweeners 2 (2014) for a ‘bit of a laugh’. Both enjoyable, the former better than the latter. Read respective reviews here and here. The Inbetweeners 2 movie I never really thought was THAT great, but it did have some good moments.
Oh and before I forget (I meant to tell you earlier but my memory – like a siv!) – August’s total brings my tally so far this year up to *drum roll please* seventy two movies. Finally perhaps (and for the first time since I first started doing these posts), I might be on the way to a hundred by New Year. Exciting! Keep watching this space.
Tropic Thunder (2008) was another re-watch one evening at home – me and my boyfriend fancied watching something silly and you don’t get much sillier than Tropic Thunder. Still a good film though and Robert Downey Jr is EFFING HILARIOUS. Let’s be honest, having a white guy play a black guy in that kind of way did give a green light to some massive clichés and stereotyping. Which was EFFING HILARIOUS.

And onto the last film on the list (and my seventy-second film watched this year!) – The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) – which was also another re-watch at home and gave me the opportunity to be my usual hilarious (AKA – antagonising and annoying) self.
After the film had ended and we were suitably freaked out, the credits rolled back round to the DVD menu, which had the creepy, weird, super scary soundtrack playing. I turned off all the lights and made horror movie monster noises and crawled along the floor a bit and then chased my boyfriend into another room. And though my boyfriend is a fully grown man and not easily scared – OF COURSE it was a little bit horrid. Mwahahaha. Just wait until it’s Halloween!

I’m so glad The Meg lived up to your expectations! I had an absolute blast watching it and was thinking at the time – I hope Emma enjoys this as much as I am!

I wasn’t a huge lover of Prometheus. Chainsaw though is a classic.

Nobody likes Prometheus, except me. Makes me proud to be ‘just the one’! 🙂

My boyfriend likes it too! He wasn’t so keen on the sequel though, felt Ridley Scott sold out with going back to the more ‘Alien’ themed film…!

YES Very glad to read that you dug Alien Resurrection. I do want to see The Meg and am kind of upset I missed out. Hopefully it will come to a cheaper cinema near me soon

An eclectic mix of films – Downey Jr. in “Tropic Thunder” never fails to entertain: “I don’t read the script. The script reads ME”….and “Prometheus” was ponderous beyond belief….I just started my #31daysofHalloween posting, beginning again with the seminal “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” – so unsettling and isn’t that what horror films are for? I like ‘Prometheus’ a lot more than you did. In fact, a lot more than most people did!
I have seen ‘Snakes On A Plane’, but could think of better things to do with my time, to be honest.
(‘Granny’s Saggy Hangers’ is more entertaining, but that’s a website. 🙂 )
It goes without saying that ‘Jaws’ is a re-watchable classic, but ‘Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’ isn’t a patch on the great Gene Wilder original.

Granny’s Saggy Hangers sounds interesting !
I really don’t like that Gene Wilder film, never have done. Only because I’m a big Roald Dahl fan and it’s so far from the original story (I know Dahl really disliked it too). This more recent adaptation was really true to the book, I was so impressed! Funny too 🙂 I don’t like Tim Burton films generally but this one and Mars Attacks! – brilliant! xxx

So much to love in Jaws. And I loooove that speech on the boat. I liked the firsts Inbetweeners more, but the second one had its moments. I do need to see Snakes on a Plane.
