Opinion Battles Round 10 – Best Anime
Best Animé
When it comes to animé we have had some of the most beautiful animated movies of all time, usually coming Japan we have decided to pick the our favourites from the amazing cinema that just doesn’t get the praise or chance in mainstream cinema.
So far we have only ever done Best of films but for the next Opinion battles we are going to pick Worst Sequel, if you want to take part email moviereviews101@yahoo.co.uk by 20th September 2015
Darren – Movie Reviews 101
The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)
I have to pick this one because even though I do feel certain films could be more complete films but this one could easily be the most fun I have had watching an animated movie. The action adventure side is so perfect for animation while the comedy is nailed down brilliantly. To further my case for this…

I voted for “Spirited Away”! I was so pleased it was on the list. I’d seen all the other Studio Ghibli titles on the list — the studio’s very popular at my house!
My personal favorite animated movie by them is called Only Yesterday (Omoide Poro Poro) and is about a twenty-something woman who goes to visit some relatives in the countryside. It is much quieter and mature than most of the studio’s other output. It’s not to everybody’s tastes and it’s quite difficult to get a copy of. (Disney Stupidos were reluctant to release it because it briefly mentioned the topic of menstration — something they clearly believed would lead to the total collapse of Western civilization.)
If you do every do get a chance to view it, though, I can’t emphasize enough that you MUST watch it to the end of the final credits. If you don’t do that, you will completely misunderstand the message of the story.

Hurrah! There’s many Studio Ghibli films I really like but ultimately it comes back to Spirited Away 🙂 I can still remember the first time I saw it!
Thanks for the tip of Only Yesterday! My boyfriend is the real ‘fan’ of Studio Ghibli and I buy him two DVDs every year – for birthday and Christmas. I will get round to that one at some point definitely! Maybe this December?!! 🙂 I’ve just found it on Amazon UK so I think I can get a copy okay. It’s annoying when DVDs are in short supply!!! I watched Mary and Max recently, a stop motion movie and I after I thought I’d like to watch the other similar effort by the same director, Harvie Krum[pet. It was over £80 on Amazon to buy on DVD!!! WHAT !
Oh yeah and I really enjoyed Grave of the Fireflies as well (do you like that?), it was very mature and very sad as well! But nice to have something a bit different and more engaging.
P.S that thing about Disney Studios!! PAHAHAHAHAPA!
How you been? 🙂

Hi Emma! I’ve been fine. I hope you have too. Grave of the Fireflies is one of those movies likes Schindler’s List or Pan’s Labyrinth that I’m very glad I watched once and would be very happy never to see again. It’s extremely well made but it’s just so sad.
If you’re going to buy Only Yesterday, I should perhaps mention a little more about it (without spoilers) so that you can decide whether or not your boyfriend will like it because it really isn’t like most other Studio Ghibli stuff.
The biggest difference is nothing much happens. There’s very little in the way of monsters of fantasy. The story is set in the 1980s (I think) and is about a young woman who’s at a bit of a crossroads in her life and so goes into the countryside to stay with some relatives and find herself. During the trip, she thinks back to various funny episodes from her childhood. There’s also a story in the present day, which I won’t go into.
I’m not a girl (obviously), but I still found her story funny, heartwarming, and very honest. If your boyfriend likes flying WW1 pigs or moving castles, though, I can’t promise he’ll enjoy it. There’s nothing like that in it.
Anyway, I loved it and I can feel myself tearing up a bit now as I think about it, but I’ve never been a very representative male, so use your judgement! 😀

I voted for Mononoke from the list. (Never the dubbed version though!) Would have liked to have seen ‘Akira’ get a mention too.
Best wishes, Pete.

Yeah some of the Studio Ghiblil films can work with the English dubs but not all of them. I never got over Liam Neeson doing the sea king in the dubbed version of Ponyo….was awful! But I genuinely like The Cat Returns, Porco Rosco and Arrietty with the dubs. Tim Curry is brilliant in The Cat Returns and Arrietty seems like ‘British’ at times with the setting and story. I think it depends on the story and how western or eastern it comes across. And who the voice actors are!! NO Liam Neeson.
Hope you’re well Pete x

I can hardly contribute to this topic but even I know lots on this list – great stuff, obviously, that resonates across the genre.

And here is that naughty description from that Danny Dyer thing.
Each team is playing hangman, but there are two muscular guys on the podiums. For every wrong answer, the man must remove an article of clothing. Danny Dyer gets a lot of them wrong and is suitably pissed. The man yanks down his undies and he must be well-endowed because Dyer runs away saying”He’s got his cock out in my face”.
