About emmakwall

me

I make no guarantees on the substance or the intelligence you will find here. But great to see you anyway!

So as well as laying on the sofa watching quiz shows, I really like films – and talking about films – and listening to film soundtracks. Horror is my favourite genre.

I don’t like taking things too seriously and enjoy injecting some fun and humour (or a vague representation at least) into my posts. So take a look around and hopefully you’ll find at least one thing you can stomach.

And yes I did nick part of my blog name from  the classic 90s kids TV show Clarissa Explains it All – I don’t really think I know everything. Just SOME things, like the most important things, like which crisp flavour is really the Ultimate Flavour?

I notice that you like horror films. Have you seen this?
    http://www.martyrs-lefilm.com/
It’s not strictly a horror film in the accepted sense, but it’s amazing nonetheless. Here is my short review.

    Best wishes, Pete.

Thanks Pete! Yes I have seen Martyrs. I featured it in one of my top 10s, ‘disturbing films’ I think!!

It made me feel very sad, and a bit sick but it was a great effort at horror. I will check out your review! Thank you 😀

And congratulations on your well deserved nomination 🙂 🙂

  7. I was a big fan of Clarissa Explains it All back in the day, much better than all that teenage witch shit!

    • emmakwall says:

Haha! Definitely 🙂 Do you remember the kid who always climbed through her window?

I love old kids TV shows. Do you remember Eerie Indiana? That was great!!

      • Yeah, it seemed to be a late 80’s/early 90’s thing in American films/shows where people were always climbing through windows. For example, this, Twin Peaks, Cool as Ice, Dawson’s Creek, Troll 2 to name but a few. Did you ever try it yourself? It’s not as easy as it looks. It’s better to just knock.

Eerie Indianna was pretty amazing. It was like David Lynch for kids. It was actually created by Joe Dante as well who I bloody love. Great days!

Do you remember Round the Twist? Or what about that other Australian show where they form a rock band, Pugwall?

        • emmakwall says:

Round the Twist!!! “have you ever….ever felt like this? when strange things happen..are you going round the twist?” Yes I did watch it 🙂

I always remember really well the episode where one of the boy’s started growing fingernails all up his arm and eventually turned into a mermaid (or mer-man I suppose). Also the one where they had the spaghetti eating contest!

I don’t remember Pugwall? I’ll look it up!!

Eerie Indiana was really something special wasn’t it. I have it on DVD, you can buy it on Amazon for £10-£15 all the episodes. I remember other ‘spooky’ kids TV shows but Eerie had the edge because it was so surreal and odd. Like you say (perfect analogy!) it was like David Lynch for kids (speaking of which – what’s your favourite Lynch movie?)

Joe Dante directed my favourite childhood movie – Inner Space. I loved it sooo much!! (what a melt!)

Small Soldiers is also one of my favourite kids movies, I’ve seen it SO many times (but that is down to how often ITV show it on a Saturday afternoon….) it’s hilarious!!!

HAHA! Dawson’s Creek ‘through the window!’ all great examples but that did make me chuckle. Didn’t Roger in Sister, Sister used to do it as well??? You’re right!! 90s people didn’t use doors…they used windows!

          • Oh, so you did watch Round the Twist then… Hahaha! I kind of knew you would have, you’re just that kind of person! (please take that as an immense compliment)

You know? I do kind of remember the merman/maid thing vaguely, but not the fingernails bit. The fucking spaghetti eating contest one though is like my main memory of the show! I think I must have somehow randomly watched that episode every time it was on CBBC! (I’m pretty sure it was CBBC, but it could easily have been on CITV) It’s such a bloody shame that there’s antiques shows on now instead of Andi Peters in his broom cupboard.

I just remembered Knightmare, but I can’t even begin to go into that!

Pugwall was a lot more obscure, I think it was on weekday mornings for a very short period. Like, 8am before Live ‘n’ Kickin’ started.

Eerie Indiana was on Channel 4 wasn’t it, around tea time? I remember it being awesome and there was something on after it as well, so it was an hour of pure quality entertainment. I absolutely love nostalgia! I always remember the “lost & found” episode or something where things were just going missing, so the lad followed the guy who was robbing it or something. I’d love to have that DVD!

My favourite David Lynch films? (I know you said film, like, not plural, but I do have a list. I’m not even joking) Mulholland Dr. could be my favourite film of all time. After that it’s Eraserhead followed by Fire Walk with me, which I still think might be the most underrated film I’ve ever seen. Then obviously Blue Velvet, The Straight Story etc.. I could go on through my top 15, but I’ll wait for you. What’s your favourite?

Haha, Innerspace is immense! I haven’t seen it in years. Obviously that and Gremlins was class, but I love The Burbs, and my favourite film of his is Piranha! The man’s a genius!

I’ve never actually seen Small Soldiers, I know of it, but I dunno, I never got around to watching it? Maybe? It does remind me of Toy soldiers though starring Sean Astin, where for whatever reason, a group of terrorists try and take over a school but the kids twat them. What was that all about?

Emma!!!! I love you! I can’t say too much at this stage but my shitfest review has major Sister, Sister references! I literally want to be your Roger right now and climb through your window and innocently talk about old tele! Have you already read my review?

            You are fantastic!

            • emmakwall says:

I do take it as a compliment, very much so! You’re about the coolest person IN THE WORLD so anything you say about me…..I gratefully receive!!!

Ah you should watch Small Soldiers, it’s really good. I’m not a huge “kids films” fan really, I prefer stuff for adults – ooh matron! Speaking of that, I saw an “ooh matron” in one of your other comments that I will reply to shortly. Are you a Carry On fan???????? I LOVE the Carry On films, so if you are….just another spooky coincidence 🙂 “…when strange things happen are you going round the twist?!”

Anyway, I digress!! Yes – watch Small Soldiers, it’s really good. It’s got a Simpsons actor in it as well – the Troy McClure one. His voice sticks out like a sore thumb haha.

I can’t believe all the things we keep saying that match up, it’s hilarious. EVEN Sister Sister!!!!!!!!! I wish I had already read your review…it’s ages until the 26th, boo!

Aww, that’s so sweet!!!! I think you’d have to be the kid from Clarissa though, I look more like her than the twins, haha!!!

Yes Eerie Indiana was on channel 4! I remember that definitely. I was watching it recently actually and Toby Maguire is in an episode when he was just a teenager. He plays a ghost looking for his lost love awwwww!

Actualy the first episode was one of my faovurites, “Foreverware” do you remember it?! These nutty 1950s kind of housewives all use these Tupperware boxes called “foreverware”. And the main woman has two chubby twin sons, she keeps them young by putting them in foreverware boxes at night!!

              What kid couldn’t like Eerie?!

I just checked Amazon, Eerie Indiana boxes et is £13 and (this is crazy) Round the Twist box set is £10!!!!!!!!!! What a shame we don’t have our own secret window to jump through and watch them 🙂

My favourite David Lynch movie is The Elephant Man 🙂

              I knew you’d be a big fan!!!!

              How was your weekend btw?

            • I don’t know about the coolest person in the world, but hey, I’m not arguing. You’ve just also given me the 100th like on my blog. Good times, I’ll think of a prize for you!

Oooh Matron! You’ve gotta love the Carry ons! I reckon Camping is my favourite, and Screaming for obvious reasons. I will maybe watch Small Soldiers as you’ve recommended it so highly. I better not be disappointed though! Ha!

Yeah, I guess the whole Clarissa set up makes more sense. Let’s bloody be them!!!!

The 26th is sooo far away. I’ve just read yours, I reckon that puts you favourite, but I might be slightly biased to be fair. Great review undoubtedly though and very funny! I still can’t believe the Sister, Sister thing. At the time I tried to reference something I thought nobody would remember, well trust you!! Anyway, you’ll see exactly what I mean a week on Thursday.

You know, I definitely watched the first few episodes, because I distinctly remember the adverts and kind of looking forward to the first one. It’s so long ago though that I really can’t remember anything other than the lost things episode. I’m lame.

I’ve just found Eerie Indiana online for free, I guess we could both watch them and then double review them or something.

I just found Round the Twist too, four bloody series. Well that’s my month sorted!

The Elephant Man? No surprises there! I really like it, but like Scum, I kind of have to be in the mood for it. I love John Hurt, I just wish we saw his face you know? Like Fassbender in Frank. I dunno. Hey, at least you never said Dune!

My weekend was pretty textbook. I aint got no woman at the minute so I just did man stuff like watch boxing. How was yours?

            • emmakwall says:

              Excellent, I love prizes!! 🙂

I hope you enjoy Small Soldiers, I think it’s one of the better kids films 🙂

OH WHAT A CARRY ON! I just found it bizarre after all our ‘gritty’ film chat and horror film chat that we could also have Carry On Films in common 🙂 that is so great!!!

Carry on Camping is probably my favourite, you can’t beat it! I love Carry On Sergeant as well. I KNEW you’d love Carry on Screaming!! That’s my grandad’s favourite bless him. I love the saucy innuendos and ridiculous sound effects. Who’s your favourite actor? Mine has to be Kenneth Williams!!!!

Yes definitely!!!!!!!!!! I love that idea. When shall we start watching it?! Where did you find Round the Twist?? I need to watch that too!

Can’t wait to read your entry on the 26th!!! Can’t believe how long Shitfest goes on for, it’s brilliant though. Something to look forward to each day 🙂 ESPECIALLY yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sister….Sister!

Haha, I thought you wouldn’t be surprised at The Elephant Man. I wasn’t surprised by your choices too! Is Mulholland Drive really your favourite film? Not that it shouldn’t be (I’ve never seen it!) I just get the feeling your top films list is very specific. Give me your top 10?

I’ve only really seen Eraserhead and I didn’t like it an awful lot haha, could you persuade me otherwise?!!

I’ve not seen Frank yet! I think you mentioned it before, is it good? I’ll definitely watch it soon!!! Yeah I know what you mean, as brilliant as John Hurt is you can’t really ‘tell’ it’s him as such. I just love the story, I’m obsessed with Joseph Merrick anyway. Anthony Hopkins is nice in it, Treves I think his name was, the doctor.

“I ain’t got no woman at the minute” loved that sentence!!!

Yeah my weekend was alright cheers, went to Suffolk for the day Saturday and did housework on Sunday, with a few little things in-between, like smoking and watching telly. I have a boyfriend but we didn’t really do much (anything!) for Valentine’s. I’m not bothered about things like that, just makes me angry I’m forced into buying a card.

  8. Hey, great blog you got here! I am your newest follower 🙂
