Worst Remake

Every year we seem to get remakes, we do get a couple of good ones but we also get some of the worst films in modern times, this upcoming week we have just got a remake of Martyrs which nobody wanted to see but what do we think is the Worst Remake.

    I hated The Wicker Man and that was without seeing the original Ems! I think my top three picks would be: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Karate Kid, and Footloose. 😦

      Haha, it should NEVER have happened!! 🙂

      I must be the only person who really liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory haha! It was just so true to the book, I loved it. Never was a fan of the Gene Wilder version though so maybe that was a factor. I’ve not see Karate Kid or Footloose remakes….thank god! Ha ha ha 🙂

        This will probably make no sense, but I didn’t think the Tim Burton version was bad on it’s own. I just think that for those of us who loved the original it paled in comparison.

          I love the Gene Wilder original too, Kim. He was so sarcastic in it, he took it to another level!

              I just never really enjoyed it, I’m not saying it to be hateful 😦 I just never did! Lol.

              But I always felt I “should” enjoy it until I found out that Roald Dahl disliked it as well. I grew up with him (and Enid Blyton!) and I just thought it was a rubbish adaptation of the book lol. I LOVED Charlie and the Chocoalte Factory! I even drew pictures of the characters when I was a kid! Having said that Gene Wilder is not an awful Willy Wonka, he’s likable in every movie 🙂 it was mainly the rest of the movie I disliked.

              I went to see Matilda the Musical at the theatre too and I didn’t like that either! Lol. (Miss Trunchball was funny but didn’t enjoy the rest….!)

              I did! I loved reading so much as a kid. I suppose the lack of technology and being an only child in the middle of nowhere contributed too. Plus both my grandparents were huge readers and I was far more bookish than I am now. Roald Dahl was always one of my huge favourites and remains one still today! I did read the Great Glass Elevator yes! I loved how the old grandparents bed was taken up in full haha 🙂 my big favourites were Matilda (no.1 favourite!), The Witches, The Twits, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Fantastic Mr Fox and The BFG. They’re the ones I read over and over again 🙂 have you read any of those dear Kim? ❤

              I read all of Dahls books too. My favs were: Charlie, The Great Glass Elevator, Matilda, The BFG, The Witches, and James and the Giant Peach. Are you going to see The BFG when it comes out Ems?

              I loved James and the Giant Peach too of course 🙂 promise! All the creepy crawlies! Wasn't that the one with the horrible aunties as well? One tall and thin and one fat and short?!

              Have you read any of his 'tales of the unexpected' or scary short stories? He really had a great mind for that sort of thing. Similarly his children's books always had that 'atmosphere' as well.
              A bit rebellious, a bit surreal!

              I love the way he often wrote the kids as heroes and adults as people you couldn't trust with flaws and ugly traits. There was always a message, but not a big long patronising message, just little things here and there…

              His autobiographies Boy and Going Solo are brilliant too, I especially love Boy. I'm not majorly keen on many autobiographical books but that one is very entertaining. I know Dahl still gets flak for apparently being a bit 'moody' and weird or embellishing his real life stories but I really loved him growing up and sometimes you can't hear anything against someone you've always loved can you!!!

          YES! You’ve hit the nail on the head there. I totally understand the love for Gene Wilder and the nostalgic value too. I think I expected to dislike the Burton version as well, so I had low expectations which helped. I am generally not a fan at all of Tim Burton movies. The main thing I loved about it though, was the boy who played Charlie. He was exactly as Charlie should be 🙂 all the kids were great actually. The sub-story with Wonka’s dad being a dentist was odd but Christopher Lee was irresistible 🙂 I thought it had some genuine good comedy in it as well!

    I loved your write-up, Emma! Oh man, I need to YouTube that scene where Nicolas Cage punches the woman while dressed like a bear! And I’ll skip the rest of that remake. I’ll have to check out the original.

    Where do I start? I voted for the same as you, but the list is endless. WHY, OH WHY, do they do it? THE BASTARDS!!! I cannot believe that they are re-making ‘Martyrs’, one of the best films ever made. WHY? WHY? YOU BASTARDS! I want to crush your skulls!
    ‘Get Carter’. WHY? ‘The Vanishing’. WHY? ‘Nikita’. WHY? I hate them all. Re-makes should be banned, even ‘True Grit’. (WHY Coens- WHY?)

      Totally agree with all of those, but must say is Martyrs really one of the best films ever made?! Hmm! I have seen it and enjoyed it. I felt so sorry for the girls. But man oh man I couldn’t watch it every day! I doubt the US version (assuming it’s the US that are remaking it?!) will be as crazy.

      Thanks for the vote 🙂 Psycho was a good choice too but something about the Wicker Man starring NIC CAGE is just so ridiculous I had to choose it.

        I should really have typed that ‘Martyrs’ was one of the best-ever in that horror genre, but I was carried away…The fact that I can’t really watch it again (I have only ever seen it once) showed me how powerful it was.
        Then again, I cannot think of any remakes I ever preferred to the original. Next thing you know, they will be doing new versions of The Godfather…
        I am still fuzzy with ‘flu, but had a big fever/temperature peak at 4 am that might have been the end of it. (Or the beginning of something worse. Time will tell…)

          Oh poor you Pete and don’t say that silly, you’re definitely nearing the end of it now if your fever went up and down again. Poor you all fuzzy 😦 I’ll keep my fingers crossed but glad to see your cheekiness and sense of humour is still in plentiful supply 🙂

          Yes I think I’ve only seen Martyrs once, powerful enough to stay with you forever. I remember feeling genuinely SAD for the girls, which doesn’t happen very often with horror movies (having said that have you seen Eden Lake? That’s a corker, but brutal in places). In Martyrs when she finds that woman in the weird metal mask thing and puts her in the bath and bathes her, it actually made me feel sad, in a way that I don’t usually get with horror movies. It was genuine kindness, tenderness even.

          Ah I bet I could think of some remakes you’d prefer!! Everyone always forgets Scarface is a remake. Or classic horrors like The Thing or The Fly (maybe not The Fly for you I can imagine you like the original a lot), they’re both remakes. I know what you mean really though, I’m just being pedantic 🙂 I know you enjoy that!! I must admit I did prefer the US remake of The Ring. I just thought the story line was better. Maybe the Japanese version was scarier but I liked the ‘detective work’ in the other. I’m really droning on. Aren’t I? I HOPE YOU FEEL OKAY!!! xxx

            I like the 1932 original of ‘Scarface’, with Paul Muni. I think Pacino overacts terribly in the modern version. (But then, so does Muni.) I prefer the Japanese ‘Ring’ to the remake, and I don’t really like either version of ‘The Fly’. (The Goldblum one made me feel a bit sick…) ‘The Thing’ is very good, but also very different to the original, in terms of ‘monster concept.’
            I’m droning on now, but even when I’m fuzzy, I still don’t like remakes, as a rule… There’s bound to be one that I like, somewhere. After all, pretty much everything is a remake of something, when it comes down to it.
            (Oh, and I just remembered, ‘Assault on Precinct 13’. What a travesty, even with the nice leggy blonde…)

              I must admit Tony Montana is VERY annoying by the end of Scarface. I wanted someone to shoot him just so he would shut the fuck up! But I’m not sure if that’s over acting or just an annoying character lol.

              I’ve never seen the original but it just does gall me the way some remakes are so accepted by the masses and some aren’t. I’m not against remakes personally, unless I really like the movie and then I’m a fantastic hypocrite! 😀

              The Fly with Goldblum is so gross isn’t it. I love it! It’s my favourite horror movie ever 🙂 I love the way there’s no bad guy as such but it’s still so sick and scary. Goldblum and Davis are both so brilliant too.

              Assault on Precinct 13! Yeah that’s pretty naff to be fair. I like Lawrence Fishburne though. I’d watch him in anything. The leggy blonde…was that the mouthy woman that worked there or the psychiatrist lady?

              XXX large ones back! For being great 🙂

    Like Mr. Vinnieh I find most remakes a disappointment. In fact I can’t come up with any remake that improved over the original, with the exception of “Dune”, which was a TV series not a movie, which I supposed doesn’t count.
