I’m a huge fan of Italian film score composer Ennio Morricone, who is largely famous for his work with film director Sergio Leone who made Spaghetti Western films. They collaborated on many titles together and any famous rift from these cowboy movies that springs to mind – Morricone would have written.
What I love about his music is it is sooo dramatic. I have always loved music that makes me feel something. And as horribly pretentious as that statement sounds I don’t mean it like that. I’m just a dreamy person and music helps my imagination go riot.
So here are three of my favourite scores from Ennio Morricone. Turn up the volume, close your eyes and enjoy!

Let your imagination go indeed. Ennio Morricone has always been one of my favorites, when it comes to film scores. The work he did on the so-called “Spaghetti Westerns” with Leone was great stuff, as you pointed out. His music, I find, has always had not only a really dramatic edge to it, but a moving quality as well, which helps to make the emotions taking place in a particular scene, that much more potent

I think it is wonderful that you allow your imagination to “riot” as you put it, when you listen to his music or your favorite music in general.

Ennio Morricone’s scores for the spaghetti Westerns were so innovative. They sounded like no other Western scores, and you’ve got a good example here. I also thought the score for the gangster epic Once Upon a Time in America was incredible. The music made the movie, IMO.

Great choice!! I’ve been listening to that recently funnily enough and very, very good. I just have a ‘thing’ for the Western scores because I love the way they make me feel.

Of course, now I have various spaghetti Western themes playing in my head, as well as choice bits of dialogue. 🙂

Sometimes I listen to Western themes whilst I’m driving on my own, for a long time – and pretend I’m on a mission!

Although the spaghetti Westerns were shot in Spain, the scenes look a lot like the American Southwest. As you imagine yourself riding across the empty, sun-baked landscapes, I guess it would be quite a contrast to England’s green and pleasant land. 😉

His work on Leone’s spaghetti westerns is incredible and iconic but I think my favourite scores of his are ‘The Untouchables’, ‘Once Upon a Time in America’ (also Leone) and ‘Days of Heaven’

Ahhhhhhh I LOVE THAT MOVIE (once upon a time in the west) it’s my grandad’s favourite film too. He said that the duel between Bronson and Fonda was the most realistic from any Western (and he’s the authority!) So do you like Man with a Harmonica? 🙂
